Product Configurator

Client: Personal Project - Product Configurator

Date: 2019

Project Type: 3D Interactive Product Configurator

A product configuration is a software application designed to enable users to customize the various components and features of a product and create a product that meets their specific needs and preferences. In this particular case, a seat was chosen as the product to be configured as a demo for this type of tool.

This project was developed as part of an academic program for the University of Edinburgh’s Master of Science in Digital Media Design degree. The project involved creating a complete design for an interactive virtual opera house, allowing users to navigate freely through its virtual interiors.

To create the interactive product configuration, the project team began by completing the 3D modelling required for this task, including the seat itself and the surrounding environment. This was a complex process that required the team to pay close attention to the details and ensure that all components of the virtual product were accurately modelled and placed in the appropriate locations.

Once the 3D modelling was complete, Unity 3D was used to code the interactive functions using the C# programming language. This included basic camera movements and seat adjustments, as well as giving users control over the materials and textures of the seat cloth and wooden parts.

Overall, the aim of the project was to demonstrate the capabilities of product configuration tools and how they can be used to create customized products that meet the specific needs and preferences of individual users. By using a seat as an example, the project team was able to showcase how product configurations can be used to create products that are tailored to the individual needs and preferences of the user, resulting in a more satisfying product experience.
